UPCOMING QUILL AND SCROLL INTERNATIONAL HONORARY SOCIETY PROGRAM DEADLINES

STUDENT ENTRIES for the 2011 International Writing and Photo Contest, co-sponsored by hsj.org, should be postmarked no later than Feb. 5. Categories include news, sports, editorial, review, column, in-depth and feature writing; editorial cartoons, news feature and sports photography, and advertisements. Work must have been published in news magazines, newspapers or online. For more information, visit the Quill and Scroll website www.uiowa.edu/~quill-sc/ under the Annual Deadlines column (on the right). The contest is open to Quill and Scroll members and to non-members.

QUILL AND SCROLL is co-sponsoring the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Awards for High School Students with the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights this year to honor outstanding achievements in covering human rights and social justice issues. The deadline is Feb. 1. Visit the RFK Center website at http://rfkcenter.org/home for more information. Entries will be submitted to the RFK Center, and Quill and Scroll will coordinate the selection of the winning entries.

KEEP THE DRIVE HIGH SCHOOL JOURNALISM AWARDS, sponsored by the Allstate Foundation, will be selected by judges coordinated by Quill and Scroll for the third year. The deadline is March 1. Students can win up to $2,000 for their reports about the dangers of texting while driving. The stories must have been published or broadcasted. More information is available at www.keepthedrive.com.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE: Is there a story your student media outlet has published that has made a difference in your community? If so, the Journalism Education Association’s Scholastic Press Rights Commission would like to consider the story for publication, to share it to encourage other student journalists and to show the power of scholastic journalism to administrators, parents, lawmakers and professional journalists.

Work can be in many forms -- electronic media, newspapers, yearbooks, multimedia -- from this year or previous years. The submission should reflect student-selected content of high journalistic quality that had an impact on the school or community.
Include with the submission:
* Statement about how this story made a difference
* Electronic version of the story - can be PDF, JPG, PNG, MP3, M4V
* Submit package for consideration to Jane.blystone@gmail.com by March 1.
* Include contact information for person submitting package

COMING SOON – What’s new and improved in the annual Quill and Scroll News Media Evaluation? Information will be provided in our next e-digest, and will be posted online by Feb. 1 at www.uiowa.edu/~quill-sc.
