Check out the following patriotic scholarships, which celebrate the red, white and blue: 1) Donna Foss Independence Day Essay Scholarship Contest Award: $5,000 Deadline: July 13, 2014 Available to: High School Freshman through High School Senior The Donna Foss Independence Day Essay Scholarship Contest is available to U.S. citizen high school students. You must write a 1500 word minimum essay on the theme “Happy Birthday America” to be eligible for this award. Three winners will receive $5,000, $2,500, and $1,000 scholarships to the accredited U.S. college or university of their choices. Forester Scholarship Deadline: July 31, 2014 Award: $1,000 Available to: High School Senior to Graduate Year 5 The Mark A. Forester Scholarship is available to students currently enrolled in school. Forester Scholarship. 4)Patriot’s Pen Competition Award: $5,000 Deadline: November 1, 2014 Available to: Maximum Age 14 Years Sponsored by Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, the Patriot’s Pen Competition is open to students in grades six through eight. To enter, you must submit a 300 – to 400 – word essay on the following theme: “Why I appreciate America’s Veterans.” Learn more information about the Patriot’s Pen Competition. 5)Veterans of Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) and Iraqi Freedom Scholarship Award: $2,500 Deadline: November 1, 2014 Available to: College Freshman through College Senior The Veterans of Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) and Iraqi Freedom Scholarship is available to active – duty and honorably discharged U.S. military veterans (to include Reservists and National Guard personnel) of the Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) or Iraqi Freedom operations. You must be actively pursuing an undergraduate degree in an eligible major at an accredited two- or four-year institution in the United States to be considered for this award. To enter, you must write and record a three- to five-minute broadcast script on the following theme: “Why Veterans are Important to our Nation’s History and Future.” Learn more information about the Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition. 7)Disabled War Veterans Scholarship Award: $2,500 Deadline: November 1, 2014 Available to: College Freshman through College Senior The Disabled War Veterans Scholarship is available to active – duty service personnel, honorably discharged U.S. military veterans, reservists, and National Guard personnel who are disabled because of wounds received during service in Enduring Freedom-Afghanistan or Iraqi Freedom Operations. You must be actively pursuing an undergraduate degree in an eligible major at an accredited two- or four-year institution in the United States to be considered for this award. You must be an AMVETS member, be a U.S. citizen, and demonstrate financial need to be eligible for this renewable award. Chase Prize Essay Contest Award: $3,000 Deadline: Varies Available to: College Freshman through College Senior Sponsored by the Marine Corps Gazette, the MajGen Harold W. Chase Prize Essay Contest is open to all Marines on active duty and to members of the Selected Marine Corps Reserve. Chase Prize Essay Contest. 9)American Legion National High School Oratorical Contest Award: $18,000 Deadline: Varies Available to: High School Freshman through High School Senior Provided by The American Legion, the National High School Oratorical Contest is open to junior high and high school students who are under the age of 20 and citizens or lawful permanent residents of the United States. You must prepare an oration on some aspect of the U.S. Constitution, with some emphasis on the duties and obligations of citizens to our government. You must the child of someone who has been determined by the federal government to have been a prisoner of war, missing in action, or killed in action or died of injuries or wounds sustained in action in southeast Asia, including Korea, or who shall become so hereafter, in any area of armed conflict in which the United States is a party. Learn more information about the Liberty Scholarship – VMI. 12)Samsung American Legion Scholarship Program Award: Varies Deadline: Varies Available to: High School Junior The Samsung American Legion Scholarship Program is open to high school juniors who are direct descendants of U.S. wartime veterans who served during one or more of the periods of war officially designated as eligibility dates for membership in the American Legion by the United States government. In order to apply, you must have completed an American Legion Boys State or American Legion Auxiliary Girls State Program and plan to attend an accredited U.S. college or university. Selection is based on the following criteria: academic record; involvement in school activities; involvement in community activities and financial need. You must demonstrate high academic achievement, character and patriotism to be eligible for this award. Learn more information about the Walter Morris Gay Memorial Award. 14)Green to Gold Scholarship Award: Varies Deadline: Varies Available to: College Freshman through College Senior The Green to Gold Scholarship is available to U.S. citizens with a minimum of two years Active Duty as well as three months of Active Duty for every one month of specialized training. You must be a high school graduate or equivalent, have a minimum GPA of 2.5, a GT score of at least 110 and pass the APFT within the last 6 months with score of 180 or higher, minimum of 60 points in each event. Also, you must submit letters of acceptance from the PMS of that Army ROTC Battalion and school offering Army ROTC. Additionally, you must not have been convicted of a domestic violence crime, have a Favorable National Agency Check (or have initiated the action), DODMERB Medical Qualification, be eligible to Reenlist, not be a conscientious objector and have no more than 3 dependents, including spouse to qualify for this award. White House Internship Program Deadline: September 7, 2014 Available to: College Freshman to Graduate Year 5 The White House Internship Program is open to undergraduate and graduate students. To be considered, you must be committed to public service, demonstrate leadership in your community, and be committed to the mission of the Obama Administration. In addition to normal office duties, interns will attend weekly lectures, volunteer at special events, participate in tours, and contribute to a community service project in the Washington, D.C., area.
