A Room of Her Own Foundation Supports Women Writers and Artists
A Room of Her Own is a non-profit organization founded in 2000 and based in New Mexico. The foundation gives gifted women the opportunity to connect and create “a room of their own” to express their creativity through writing. The ultimate award is the annual Gift of Freedom award.
Each year, the Gift of Freedom award recognizes the writing talents of women across the country for works in fiction, non-fiction and poetry. The awards include two $5,000 awards each to two finalists, and one award of $50,000 to the Gift of Freedom winner. The awards help women complete their writing projects and goals.
The two-year grants are open to U.S. women whose writing and artistic objective benefit the larger community. Applicants' objectives must include artistic, personal and spiritual objectives. It must provide a benefit to both the community and other female artists.
The award was named after a quote by famous English novelist Virginia Woolf who once told readers that creative women had a problem: Not enough money and not enough locked rooms in which to work. The purpose of the organization's award is to offer other women the privacy, finances, and creative support to pursue their work.
